The first human cell-based nano-biological coating for implantable medical devices
Selected tissue-derived cells are added to the surface of the implant or medical device and allow to attach and adapt to the conditions
Cells will proliferate on the surface of the implant forming a 2D tissue layer under growth conditions in a growing device
Cells are exposed to a chemically-induced stress that triggers production of nanoparticles that crosslink with the membranes and form AuPEC*
Through a bacteriostatic and bactericidal effect, the composite of cells and nanoparticles will destroy and avoid the contact of any microbial pathogen that comes in close contact to the implant.
By resembling the host environment of the cells, once the medical device is implanted, tissue can recognize the surface better than those in bare implants and proliferate at a faster rate without risk of infections.
The composite can also protect the implant from degradation associated to the growth of cells and body fluids, as well as external or internal chemical and biochemical corrosion
